ZEPP Country Music is proud to offer Gourd and other truly "old time style" banjos handmade by Jeff Menzies of Toronto (that's Jeff in the photo, looking suspiciously like my store logo!). In stock now are:
-
- 12-inch Minstrel Banjo
- This neat banjo is maple, and has a nicely carved neck, with a simple, period headstock. The tuners are fiddle-style friction pegs, of course.
- The 12-inch, thin pot has a skin head and a hand-made bone tailpiece to hold the banjo's natural gut strings.
- Jeff is making some really nice, old-style banjos these days, and this one is no exception.
Only $995, and we even toss in a gig bag (sorry, it won't fit a case because of its vertical 5th string peg) Sold
-
- 12-Inch Tack Head, Grain Measure Banjo
- This beautifully crafted piece has a 12-inch, laminated pot for which Jeff has built a beautiful mahogany neck with a small brass overlay in its scoop. As the "tack head" moniker suggests, this banjo has a skin head tacked to its rim.
- It has fiddle-style friction tuners in its scroll headstock, and is strung with Nylgut strings, which attach to a custom, bone tailpiece.
Hear this banjo.
- As are most of his banjos, this is perfect for Civil War reenactments or just sitting at home enjoying its plunk. This unique piece is only $895, including a
free, collectible Menzies 3-string gourd mini banjo! (Sorry, but as these instruments are handcrafted, there is no case available, though a guitar gig bag should work.)
-
- A Nice Small Gourd Banjo
- This is a superbly made little banjo, using a relatively small (ca. 10-inch diameter) gourd. The fretless neck is made of beautiful, figured black walnut. Its delightfully carved scroll headstock is fitted with ebony tuning pegs and it's strung with gut strings.
- The calf skin head is tacked to the gourd (thus making it a "tack-head"), and it has a bubinga tailpiece.
- It's a blast to play and has a great sound from that small body, which you can
hear with this link.
- This is a great little banjo--perfect for Civil War reenactments or for just sitting around and playing. Sold
-
- 13-1/2 Inch Tack Head, Grain Measure Banjo
- This beautifully crafted piece started out as an antique oaken grain measure for which Jeff has built a beautiful black walnut neck.
- It has fiddle-style friction tuners, and is strung with Nylgut strings, which attach to a bubinga tailpiece. As always, Jeff's work is impeccable, and with that big calf skin head, this banjo produces a great sound, which you can
hear with this link.
