Scooped Goodtime Open-backs : Goodtime banjos make great clawhammer instruments, and when scooped have a particularly nice sound. (Note to non-clawhammereurs: "Scooping" is the removal of the frets above no. 17, and the lowering of the fingerboard by scooping away the wood so that one can play easily over the neck with the right hand, which produces a particularly soft and pleasant tone.) Deering doesn't offer these banjos factory-scooped, so we have done it ourselves. BTW, a scooped Goodtime is what I take to picnics and on camping outings: Lightweight, great-sounding, and no risk to my high-dollar banjos! The Scooped Goodtime is $399. Add a Deering embroidered gig bag for $40, or upgrade to a TKL hardshell case for $75. Now in Stock.
By popular demand, we now offer what has been called a "ZEPPIFIED" Goodtime banjo. Many folks have heard the benefits of adding a Renaissance head, a Moon bridge, and a No-Knot tailpiece to a scooped Goodtime banjo to make an inexpensive, yet killer clawhammer banjo, a particular setup that I like and use--I frequently take just such a Goodtime to jam sessions, and this is how the Goodtime I use at home is set up. We've done so many of these conversions, that we now offer a package deal to save you some money. Here's a

- Sierra
- Nice mahogany instrument with simple dot inlays and satin finish. Despite the Deering photos, this model is now made with an ebony fingerboard and now has the Deering logo on the headstock in gold, rather than white...
- This banjo sounds great and is a wonderful entry-level instrument with professional sound and playability.
This is a ZEPP Country Music Pick: I feel that the Sierra offers the best, professional-grade sound and playability for the buck; the savings comes from the absence of mud flaps and racoon tails. There's nothing fancy about this instrument--it just gets the job done, and done right!
