Deering John Hartford 24-Fret Model
Deering's John Hartford model offers some unusual features, including a tone ring made of grenadillo wood, 24 frets (rather than the now standard 22), and a "Pop-On" resonator.
We did not opt for the quickly removeable resonator for this banjo, but we do have a 24-fret, wooden tone ring banjo here!
The Hartford is characterized by an elaborate inlay based on steamboats, reflecting the late Mr. Hartford's interest therein.
With a Deering-branded hardshell case, list price is $4689, but please call or email info@zeppmusic.com for our prices. Now in stock

The Deering John Hartford 24-Fret Model is a maple banjo with a warm, brown stain and a satin finish.
| |
The one-piece maple neck is highly flamed.
The unique peghead features an equally unique steamboat-inspired inlay in its ebony overlay.
| |
The Hartford's tuners are high quality, Gotoh-made, Deering-branded planetaries for the "long" strings, and a Gotoh worm and pinion-geared 5th string.
The ebony finger board has simple, small dots contrasting with the elaborate steamboat inlays at the 1st, 8th & 9th, and 21st & 22nd frets.

| |
The banjo comes with a Deering's proprietary tailpiece and a Deering bridge. The tone ring is made of grenadillo wood. The extra two high frets have the effect of pushing the other frets further from the pot, so the bridge must be displaced forward to compensate. The net effect is warmer, deeper tone than the 22-fret model has.

The resonator and neck have multiple black and white binding; all the metal parts are nickel-plated. Note the grenadillo tone ring visible in this photo.
| |
The resonator is flamed maple.

The "extra" frets and inlay show clearly here. Note that 24 frets means two complete octaves on each string. Well, on 80% of the strings, at least. The 5th string isn't quite long enough...
